What Dancing On Stage Taught Me About Fear and Life

Unexpected life lessons from participating in Fear Experiment…twice.

In a few weeks on September 18th, I’ll be heading to my second Fear Experiment(FE) show. What is Fear Experiment, you may be asking?

From the website: “it is a unique, fun way to create community, push oneself, learn something new, and laugh. A lot. Strangers come together to learn an art-form, rehearse for two and a half months, and then are rockstars for a night, in front of hundreds. For people not looking to be the next Baryshnikov or Tina Fey but looking to challenge themselves, meet others, and have a consistent source of laughter and support.”

This is also the tenth anniversary of the show and the final one as it’ll be retired after this. As I mentally and physically prepare myself to go into the last week of rehearsals, I am overcome with emotion, much of which is pride for myself and my fellow experiment-mates.

Fear Experiment has been synonymous with Saya Hillman for about as long as I’ve known her and always been something that was right on the edge of my comfort zone. But last year that all changed, when I mentioned to her that I was thinking of possibly applying to Fear Experiment. To which she replied on Twitter saying…
